Chicago was AMAZING!!!

There is a multitude of reasons why people should see Chicago: The Musical. It is a fantastic show. Certainly, the premise of the bad girls getting away with murder isn't socially idealistic in our American culture; however, it's a brilliant commentary on the structure of the American judicial system and how "reasonable doubt" and "temporary insanity" are driving forces in determining someone's alleged innocence.

I have never been to the Hollywood Bowl before, and I absolutely must say I could not have asked for a better experience. The ticket prices were completely reasonable given the position of our seats. Anticipation built as my roommate and walked around the Bowl to see all of the people with their picnic baskets and glasses of wine. It was truly lovely.

The main reason I went to this show was due to Lucy Lawless. Thousands of fans flocked to the Hollywood Bowl for Chicago because they knew that big star names were headlining this show. Seated around us were Ashlee Simpson fans, Stephen Moyer fans, people who won cars on The Price is Right... It was a culture I didn't even know existed in this city.. a giant collective of supportive fans.

Growing up on XENA: Warrior Princess, I have been a Lucy Lawless fan since she originated her role in Hercules. I could not say no to this opportunity to see her perform live... and I was not disappointed. Her lower register has always been powerful, but being in her presence period was magical. I know many fans will review about how incredibly talented this cast of characters was and they will be right.

Even with the lack of strong vocals from Ashlee Simpson and Drew Carey, they made up for it by far with their character work. Brooke Shields knew what she was doing when she cast this show. Stephen Moyer and Samantha Barks were absolutely wonderful as well.

The performance that I feel really shook the Hollywood Bowl truly belonged to the young man who played Mary Sunshine, Mr. Drew Tablak. Looking through the bios, it was plain to see that he was the only principal character who was not significantly famous before obtaining this principal role. It's so refreshing to come to a performance and see a talented young person being given the opportunity to "Razzle Dazzle" us alongside a slew of All-Star industry professionals. His vocal control was beyond incredible and the strength of his falsetto was breath-taking.

Overall, this show was phenomenal and my only regret is that I couldn't bring everyone in the world to see it. The evening was lovely, and if you missed it, you missed a beautiful piece of art.
